Amazing Web Page

I bought a IPod nano in July and was looking for some free downloads but didn't want the downloading police knocking on my door at 3:25 A.M and dragging me into my driveway in my underwear with my hand handcuffed behind my back. (I'm not kidding, that stuff happens all the time, we are after all a capitalist society where "he who has the gold, rules". ). I somehow stumbled across this web page who calls themselves the "public library of the Internet". All the downloads they have are either in the public domain or they have permission from the copyright holder, gotta love it , no guilt downloads! It took less than a week before I filled up 8 gig of live shows, some of which I actually attended. Check this site out! It has old radio shows, live shows of the grateful dead, from all types of music festivals. etc. Go there and explore your will be amazed what you find

Both my cars have a licence plate frame that says "US Army Veteran-7th Trans; the Army's Navy".
This article is about the Army's 7th Transportation Group at Ft. Eustis Virginia where I served twice during my time in the US Army. The patch I wore has been replaced by something else so for the graphic I used the Army's Transportation Corps' flag. They have even hired "body language experts" to say what it means when a person who works 24/7 puts his feet on the desk during a phone call. If you go to that link and read carefully, you'll see they even make up what Obama was saying. If these people spent as much time working for the benefit of the country instead of just making stuff up, maybe we could get out of the ditch the conservatives put the country in.
I live in a very very conservative part of the country. The way conservatives are acting reminds of when Clinton was elected. The VERY SAME WEEK Clinton was elected, "Impeach Clinton" signs had already sprouted up on highway 99 near Pixley California. Of course in those days Pixley had a right wing militia radio station and many members, but that appears to me where this anti Obama movement is starting.

Nine Pound Hammer

There are lots of songs about a nine pound hammer. I think most are blue grass or old timey. A nine pound hammer is the one that the chain gangs used to use, kinda like in the movie "O brother where art Thou? A nine pound hammer is not a good thing unless i guess you are using it voluntarily to fix your driveway or something.
So why am I talking about a 9 pound hammer and who is listening anyway?
I work in a 5 attorney office and we were down to 3 attorneys this week so i have had a very hectic week and was unable to completes tasks that HAVE be completed by this coming Tuesday. the law profession is one where oftentimes (luckily not always though) a deadline is a deadline and there are true and serious consequences to be suffered if the deadline is not met. That is a long way of saying I had to work today, but I am now finished with the vast majority of the task that had been hanging over my head.
I feel like I have thrown down the 9 pound hammer, that is why I'm talking about implements of destruction.
Have a good weekend all, I will, I feel much much better!!

Was Ronald Reagan an Even Worse President Than George W. Bush?

It saddens and amazes me that republicans blame Obama (who has been in office less than 6 months) for problems that have been longstanding for years and started with the unemployed actor, Ronald Reagan, who was elected president in 1980.
It saddens me because the right wing's intellectual dishonesty and refusal to work within the system shows the republicans do NOT care about the country's benefit unless they are the ruling party. Rather than just disagree with policy many refuse to even acknowledge Obama's right to be president by pushing the ridiculous issue of Obama not even being a citizen.

The starting point for many of the catastrophes confronting the United States today can be traced to Reagan's presidency.

Support the Right to Arm Bears (or-don't forget the guns)

Don't get me wrong, I support the 2nd amendment. I think every law abiding citizen has a right to self defense. I think anyone who is not a felon should be allowed to pack heat (I.E. concealed weapon). It just not make sense to me that people feel the need to "blow 900 rounds a minute" or use hollow points.

Does God Hates Shrimp?

Gary, here is place you can start commenting, I'll add more posts later. As background for anyone else reading this, a dear old freind of mine & I are moving our discussion of religion and politics to this blog, partly because we have apparently offended a freind of his that doesn't like my views. Whatever. Plus, facebook doesn't lend itself to an indepth discussion. here we go,but I doubt I can keep up.

Right wing christians hate gays because the Bible says there are an abomination. Based on that one word some churchs are working to deny equal rights. But the word abomination us used a lot. Based on the scripture in the picture, logically God hates shrimp and other bottom feeders, so we shouldn't eat them.
Remember the bible has been used to support slavery of blacks, go to war and more recently to stop inter-racial marriage

Obama is being criticized for not participating in National Prayer day yesterday, May 7, 2009, other than issuing a Presidential Proclamation.

myth of republican fiscal responsibility

My last post reminded me of a Doonesbury cartoon I read last year, which through the miracle of the internet I was able to find and post here. You should be able to click on the cartoon to make it big enough to read. If not here are the words:

Short Memories

I am getting e-mail by people wringing their hands about Obama spedning too much money. I am amazed about what short memories people have.

"The first thing (George Bush II) did when they got in office eight years ago was to eat through the nation's entire supply of seed corn, stored for them by those damn liberals, the Clinton administration. When (George Bush II) handed Bill Clinton the keys to the White House he also handed him a $290 billion deficit.

Frustration

For some reason this blog no longer will allow me to put in a "hot link" so you can click on a site and be magically transported there by a click of a mouse. I have tried everything, so I am giving up.
I was trying to post some serious stuff and and I wanted to give the sites. Instead, I'm going to post something not serious, like me wrestling an alligator a few days ago.

Should US Military recruit kids?

Speaking as someone who voluntarily enlisted during Viet Nam when I had a very high lottery draft number (262), so never would have been drafted, I don’t see any reason why; military recruiters can’t keep their paws off of our kids until they turn 18. What is the problem, exactly!?
I resent my tax money being spent by the government suing Eureka and Arcata about a law that makes perfect sense to me.

“Now Arcata is at it again, with a law blocking the military from recruiting anybody in town under the age of 18. And this time, the law has the backing not of a few City Council activists, but of thousands of voters who went to the polls in November.

Where do elephants & gorillas get protein?

I just got an e-mail asking about “where do you get any protein if you don’t eat meat?”
Where do gorillas and elephants get their protein!? They are some of biggest land mammals and they are vegetarians.
Gorillas are herbivores , eating fruits, leaves, and shoots. Further they are classified as foliovores. Much like other animals that feed on plants and shoots, they sometimes ingest small insects also Gorillas spend most of the day eating. Their large sagittal crest and long canines allow them to crush hard plants like bamboo. Lowland gorillas feed mainly on fruit while Mountain gorillas feed mostly on herbs, stems and roots. I do admit that in a severe bind they will eat grubs, but they gotta be pretty hungry to eat frubs, wouldn’t you?

The Mars Ocean Odyssey

This is an interesting blog that is written by a guy who is trying to simulate a voyage to Mars by sailing on a sailboat for three years outside the sight of land. Sounds a little crazy, I know, and after two years by himself his blogs are beginning to sound a little disconnected from what you & I may think is reality, but this is real and happening everyday. He is sailing in the most dangerous part of the world, the southern ocean.
He is living off the sea and what he has carried for 2 years on his boat. No re-supply, no nothing. It is fascinating to read, I’ve been following him for nearly the entire voyage.

My roses suddenly became covered with aphids (the picture is of my aphids before I sprayed) this week end so I went out and sprayed then all with a soap solution (including 2 neighbors roses, but don't tell them , because I like to pick their roses if I need them, so it is in my best interest to keep their roses healthy too). I was glad I used soap instead of pesticides, because before I was done there were bees and lady bugs hanging out on the roses.

While spraying, I got thinking about Rose Ann Cash's song "God is in the roses" ( and the thorns) so here are the lyrics.

Warning, she write this song after she lost her father, mother and step mother in one year.

Brushing Teeth

Cleaniness is next to Godliness, right?

Here are my Grandkids brushing their teeth.

The flash cast a shadow, but I only had a few seconds to take these because I knew once Nathaniel knew there was a camera aimed at him it'd all fall apart, the last picture is proof of that. So, I didn't have any time to make any decisions of natural light versus flash. My Canon XTI does great with natural light, but for me, it is hard to trust natural light settings indoors when I know I have only a few shots before the whole thing goes south.

why cow county?

I've been asked why do I call my blog 'Dave's view from Cow County'. It is because I work in a county which literally has MORE dairy cows than people. I live in the county next door which has nearly as many dairy cows than people.

Internet Radio

Check out this radio station! I first heard it in about 1977 when we were visiting Steve & Linda in San Jose. The station was called KFAT which was a listener supporter station, but in about 1989 it morphed into a commercial station called KPIG. The music stayed the same. Even the internet version has commercials, but they aren't your typical commercials for the most part, most are somewhat entertaining.
Anyway, I highly recommend you check this station out!!!!!!!!!

Reach Out and Track Someone

We already knew about the Bush's adminstration illegal spying of US citizens that has been going on. This week we learned that the phone records of up to a trillion (yes, trillion with a T) of everyday Americans are being collected by the government. I'll be posting a blog about that later.

So much for the republicans being the party of "small government" fiscal responsibility and leaving us alone!

Come to find out, that cell phone in our pocket doubles as a tracking device, even if you are not making a call.

Most people know that when they make a mobile call--during a 911 emergency, for example--authorities can access phone company technology to pin down their location, sometimes to within a few feet.

A lesser-known fact: Cell phone companies can locate you any time you are in range of a tower and your phone is on. Cell phones are designed to work either with global positioning satellites or through "pings" that allow towers to triangulate and pinpoint signals. Any time your phone "sees" a tower, it pings it.

I have discovered a great new site for free music, Vault Radio My good freind Jim B had originally e-mailed me about it, I listened once, must have liked it 'cause I book marked it, but then promptly forgot about it. A few weeks ago I was getting rid of old bookmarks, saw it and clicked and am glad I did!! It is great. I feel like I'm back in my living room in Hanau Germany 1972-1974 when I was in the US Army and Gloria & I had no TV and nothing but a Teac reel to reel for entertainment.

Bill Graham and his concert promotion company, Bill Graham Presents, produced more than 35,000 concerts all over the world. His first venue, the legendary Fillmore Auditorium, was home to many of rock's greatest performers - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Prince - and the list goes on and on.
Graham taped thousands of live performances and stored the tapes in the basement of the BGP headquarters. These tapes and the concerts they captured lay dormant until the Bill Graham archive was acquired by Wolfgang's Vault (Bill Graham's given first name was Wolfgang) in 2003.
Vault Radio is now playing selected tracks from these concerts in an FM-quality, 128K digital radio stream. Songs will be added to and removed from the radio show on a regular basis. We will be broadcasting unaltered live performance music from many of the greatest bands of the last 40 years. The music you hear on Vault Radio has not been sweetened or polished. I'm Back

My, my, time flies!! It has been almost a year since I have posted on my blog. I am going to get back into it, so check back often. Recent events have caused me to want to sent a poltical e-mail to everyone on my list, but stopped, knowing that sometimes the truth hurts, so I'll post stuff here and people can choose to read it or not read it. Of course, I always thought that was what the delete button was for, but I don't want to anger anymore freinds or acquaintances.
Like I said, check back often, it won't be all politics. In fact the next post will be a fun one.

OK, OK, I know the last three posts were pretty serious & depressing, so, back to BEER !!
Wow, too bad I didn't print my ads on beer mugs when I ran for Municipal Court Judge back in 1988. Maybe I would have won !? I learned a lot from that election, mostly, I learned I didn't want to run for anything ever again. I would run for a hand crafted beer though.

Don't Blame Newsweek

When I started this blog way back last month, I had intended to stay away from discussing the prison abuses in Irag, Afganistan and 'Gitmo despite the fact that its obvious the abuses were casued by the Bush administrations "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" and open approval for torture (sorry Monthy Python http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/python/monty.html; here is the script of the skit but it sure losses a lot in just a bare reading! http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/python/Scripts/NudgeNudge,KnowWhatIMean) .

But now that Newsweek is being blamed for the riots in Afganistahn, I am compelled to at least mention it.

Turn in your family or go to jail

The party that claims it is for smaller government and rights of the individual is at it again.

"Neighbors spying on neighbors? Mothers forced to turn in their sons or daughters? These are images straight out of George Orwell's 1984, or a remote totalitarian state. We don't associate them with the land of the free and the home of the brave, but that doesn't mean they couldn't happen here. A senior congressman, James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), is working quietly but efficiently to turn the entire United States population into informants--by force.
Sensenbrenner, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman, has introduced legislation that would essentially draft every American into the war on drugs. H.R. 1528, cynically named "Safe Access to Drug Treatment and Child Protection Act," would compel people to spy on their family members and neighbors, and even go undercover and wear a wire if needed. If a person resisted, he or she would face mandatory incarceration.
Here's how the "spy" section of the legislation works:
If you "witness" certain drug offenses taking place or "learn" about them, you must report the offenses to law enforcement within 24 hours and provide "full assistance in the investigation, apprehension and prosecution" of the people involved. Failure to do so would be a crime punishable by a mandatory minimum two-year prison sentence, and a maximum sentence of 10 years."

Is Iraq Viet Nam on Speed?

At 30: Iraq and the Vietnam Syndrome

If you started reading this Blog from the bottom, then you know that it was the realization that the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and the end of the Viet Nam War was both on April 30th, threw me into a philophisical spin that ended up with me looking for a way to express my views, hence this weblog.

This comparison is something a lot of people don't want to make, but if we can't learn from our mistakes, then we shouldn't make mistakes, right?

At the beginning of Iraq War II there was a lot of talk about "we have learned not to repeat our mistakes from Viet Nam". Come to find out what that really meant was limiting information such as embedded reporters, no pictures of flag drapped caskets and no counting of cilivian dead.

One good change that was apparently made was that soldiers no longer shipped out to the war zone as an individual, but would tarvel only with their units. A pressing need for more soldiers in Iraq has apparently caused that change to go down the tubes as I met a 18 year old soldier here in the State of Jefferson a few weeeks ago that has orders in- hand to ship out to Iraq alone.
I asked him what happened to 'unit only' movements and he said that if the Army reclassifies a soldier away from their regualr job (Military Occupational Specialist or MOS ) and designates them as a "security specialist" then that person will go alone and be attached to unit already fighting, just like Viet Nam.

The sending of tens of thousands of soldiers into battle ill-prepared culturally and militarily. Our soldiers in Iraq do not know who is on our side -- who they should save and who they should shoot. Sound familiar?
Destroying cities to save them (notably, Fallujah) and the killing of tens of thousands of civilians.
No Gulf of Tonkin incident, no weapons of mass destruction.
Yet despite all the above, very few in the mainstream media are calling for the a pullout in Iraq or even for setting a withdrawal deadline -- again, very much like Vietnam until the early 1970s.
Iraqization and Vietnamization.
Did I mention the enormous cost, $300 billion and counting for Iraq? The crippling of a second-term president's approval ratings?
There's even a new "domino theory": We must establish democracy in Iraq (apparently at any cost) to inspire American-friendly governments throughout the region.
As for the difference in the casualty count: For the parent whose child has been killed or badly maimed it makes no difference whether the son or daughter was one of a hundred damaged that week or one of a thousand. And every loss of limb or loss of life takes place in the context of more than half of the Americans back home feeling the war is "not worth it."
But let me turn this over to another baby boomer, a Vietnam veteran named Patrick Sheridan, who was permanently disabled in 1970 when a mine exploded under the personnel carrier he was riding in. He's not exactly one of Goldberg's effete antiwar vets nostalgic for the "good old days."

In an article in today's Bozeman (Mt.) Daily Chronicle, Sheridan warned that the U.S was reliving its Vietnam mistake in Iraq, getting involved again in a horrific internal conflict. "We've gotten ourselves enmeshed in a difficult, protracted war," he said, "that doesn't seem to be winnable at this point."

Radio on the Internet

In 1977 I went to San Jose to visit my in-laws, Steven & Linda Core. While they were at work I had a little time on my hands and started noodling around with the radio, trying to see what was on and I ran across KFAT Radio out of Gilroy, CA. My musical life has not been the same since. Alas and alack, KFAT no longer exits, but it did morph into KPIG radio. Since I have never lived within a FM wave of San Jose I only got to listen on visits out of my own area. Until the advent of the inetrnet that is. Miracle of miracles, I found KPIG on the Internet (not to be confused with Hog Ranch Radio, the pirate station high in the Sierras that broadcasts only about 10 days a year).
So I was in hog Heaven listenting to KPIG, no pun intended, on the internet until the **#**# ing lawyers got involved and KPIG had some liscensing issues with the music so they had to start charging to listen.

That is the bad news.

The good news: I've found some free stations that play that good 'ol Americana-canjun-celtic-hawaiian-country-psycho-jam-bluegrass type of music.

http://www.kfok.org/ is a community based public radio station that plays lots of different types of music but concentrates on the type of music one would heard at the Strawberry Music festival. http://www.strawberrymusic.com/ (if you go to this site click on fun stuff, then click on photos and go to fall 2003, you'll see "3 generations of Strawberrians", which is Nathaniel, Michael, Ron & me! ; note: I've lost 50 lbs since that picture was taken)

http://www.woodsongs.com/ is a weekly radio show that broadcasts on the net. BUT the real reason I'm passing this one on is because of the incredible archive of old shows that are available on demand. When you go to the site click on 'general store' and you'll arrive at the archive. I'm listening/watching to a video right now.

I've listened to http://www.kvmr.org/ for several years now, it is worth checking out, but you'll need to check out the program schedule to tune when there is something you like.

The best part? These sites are all free!!!

Public Radio and the news in the State of Jefferson

Besides the wonderful scenery, one of the great things about living in the State of Jefferson is Jefferson Public Radio JPR) http://www2.jeffnet.org/ , a National Public Radio (NPR) afflifate http://www.npr.org/ and the station I volunteer for, Northstate Public Radio http://www.kcho.org/ which is KFPR 88.9FM in Reding and 91.7 FM in Chico

A while ago I got tired of newpapers and stopped reading them. I get about half my news from JPR and NPR and about most of the rest from the internet. My internet sources are many and varied but about 40% are "standard" outlets such as

JPR covers the entire state of Jefferson as shown on the map below and NorthState Public radio covers from the Oregon border to about the southern border of the State of Jefferson, but doesn't make it over to Humboldt or Mendocino county, as far as I know. The station has many, many 'translators' so maybe it does.

Living in an fairly isolated part of Far Norhtern California, I feel very fortunate to have not one but TWO great listener supporter stations. Now a days we have internet radio, but I'll leave THAT for another post!

The State of Jefferson

What exactly is the State of Jefferson you ask? Jefferson is located in the mountain border region of northern California and southern Oregon where I live. There have been many attempts at forming a new state comprised of northern California and southern Oregon, but none has gained so much attention and retained it as the secession movement of 1941. They sucedded every Thursday.
The abundant supply of minerals and timber in this region was largely inaccessible due to the lack of sufficient roads and bridges into the rugged mountain border country. The local pioneering people grew weary of unfulfilled promises from Salem and Sacramento to help fund sufficient highway projects in the region while building campgrounds in the cities where there were more votes.
Representatives from the mountain border counties involved met in Yreka, CA on November 17, 1941 to form an alliance to obtain federal aid for the construction and repair of bridges and roads. The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted to allocate $100 to research the possibility of seceding from the state of California and joining the other counties to form a new 49th state. The Yreka Chamber of Commerce was very instrumental in persuading the Board.
The local newspaper ran a contest to name the new state and the winning entry was Jefferson. The winner of the contest pocketed $2 for his efforts. Yreka was designated the temporary state capital where the ‘State of Jefferson Citizen’s Committee’ was formed. They proceeded to stop traffic on Highway 99 outside of town and handed their ‘Proclamation of Independence’ out to travelers.
Jefferson made the papers nearly every day, competing with headlines of Germany's ravaging of Europe. The San Francisco Chronicle sent a young reporter, Stanton Delaplane, to cover the events. He traveled the rain-soaked roads to speak with locals to get a feel for the secession movement from their point of view. He got stuck in the mud down the Klamath River but that did not stop him from writing a series of colorful articles on the rebellion which earned him the coveted Pulitzer Prize.
On December 4, Judge John L. Childs of Crescent City in Del Norte County was elected governor. A torchlight parade complete with horses, marching bands and sign-carrying young people riding in trucks was held in Yreka followed by a ceremonious inauguration held on the courthouse lawn.
Hollywood newsreel companies were present to record the events, including the highway barricades. The State of Jefferson was off to a banner start.
The newsreels were to air nationally the week of December 8, but tragically on December 7th Pearl Harbor was bombed and the State of Jefferson rebellion of 1941 came to an end. The people of the region went to work for the war effort and good roads were eventually built into the backcountry to access strategic minerals and timber. These same roads have helped countless numbers of rural families make a living from the land that continues to produce abundant, quality natural resources.
The State of Jefferson 'state of mind' remains in the hearts and minds of people everywhere.
